Benny was born in New York City, grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, then returned to New York to attend SUNY Purchase College, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Studio Production. After moving to Brooklyn, New York, he played drums and percussion for songwriters, bands, and dozens of musicals, accompanied modern-dance classes, and taught drum students of all ages. 

In 2014, following two years of touring internationally with Swear and Shake, Benny moved to Nashville, Tennessee. He has since earned his Master’s degree from American University in Audio Technology, and lives in Woodside, California.
